“There is absolutely no inevitability as long as there is a willingness to contemplate what is happening.”
Marshall McLuhan
After years suffering from addiction, and an unmanageable life (to say the least), I finally asked for help, by admitting that I may not be able to quit on my own. I did not know it at the time, but I had just used a pivotal tool…a tool that I did not know I even posessed…WILLINGNESS…and it was about to save my life. I had finally become willing…willing to admit that I was an alcoholic, willing accept help, willing to change my life. For years past, I had known there was another solution than my own devices, yet I had not been even close to being willing to accept that solution. In a moment of clarity, or perhaps desperation, I released the firm grip with which I had been strangling my life and asked for help…a choice that changed my entire existence. Soon after, I joined the fellowship of AA. Once there, and following the actions suggested in the program, I learned that in order to keep my sobriety and to continue receiving the gifts that result, I must remain in a state of willingness.
Now I admit that my rebelious tendencies have sometimes taken over and willingness takes a back seat to control, ego and obsession, but this is not about a quick fix or instant change. I have found that real change occurs through being consistent in my efforts over time and by practicing willingness in all of my affairs each day, I begin to experience what feels like walking through a gateway of opportunity and willingness is the key. In fact, each time I chose to become more willing to learn, to share to listen or to give, the results (my experiences) mirror back to me that choice. In other words, I receive that which I send.
For me willingness is, therefore, a lifeline to expressing my highest self. It is the key that unlocks the possiblities and opportunities that become my experience.
Here’s a guide for each day that really works:
1. Identify what it is you wish to change…perhaps the quality of a relationship or having more money or time.
2. Write this down and declare it as a commitment-”I_______hereby commit to________.”
3. Take at least one action per day in pursuit of this goal NO MATTER WHAT.
Sound simple?
Try it on for the next week and tell me how it goes…
To your success,
